Meet Shena Cooper owner of HydroFit: Aqua Cycling

Shena Cooper is a school teacher by day and a fitness fanatic by night! I met Shena a couple weeks ago at Raleigh Row House. After my class, she introduced herself. Full of energy and spunk, we instantly made a connection.. She told me that she was a underwater cycling instructor and the owner of HdryoFit NC.

First of all, what the heck is underwater cycling?

Underwater cycling or Aqua Cycling is a indoor cycling class format that takes place in a pool. Basically, it is stationary land cycling except your bike is submerged in water! 3/4s of your body is in the water (waist down) and the rest of your body is out of the water (chest up). So no bad hair days! The class is a choregraphed rhythm ride similar to boutique cycling studios such as Cyclebar, Flywheel, and Rush Cycle.

The aqua bikes are made for the pool and they and are high-tech. Unlike cycling class, resistance is changed before the bike goes into the pool. The cool thing is you get double the resistance: from the bike, yourself, from the water, and you can add resistance bands for and extra kick.

I tried class with Shena last Wednesday and let me tell you, it is different. I’m not that great at choreographed moves, but I think I did a good job. I would recommended this workout to everyone, especially for runners who are cross training and people who suffer from injuries; it is easy on your joints and your body. I felt good! And…… I felt it in the morning. #killerworkout

Q&A With Shena COOPER:

What is unique about your fitness journey?

I have been teaching for 16 years and I was ready to break into a new thing. I had gained weight, I was stressed out, I was getting older, things had settled down and I was married. I tried to loose weight for my wedding, I was successful–but I couldn’t sit down in my wedding dress! I had to make a change but I was so tired…

What changed?

That following January, I was so tired and exhausted. I didn’t have time to workout. One day, I heard about this wellness product called Isagenix, I couldn’t afford it. But, my husband gifted it to me. Within 4 months, I lost 30lbs. I could do stuff that I hadn’t done before.

What attracted you to cycling?

I was invited to a class and at first, I couldn’t do it. Like, I couldn’t make it through a class. I couldn’t keep up; I felt like I was going to die. I kept pushing myself and it gradually got better and better, I was just so determine. Plus, I thought it was cool. You get a full body workout–the music and beats are cool. I struggled at it, but I could not let it get the best of me.

How long have you been teaching cycling?

Like literally a few months! I mean I have been cycling for over two years hard and after that I decided I really wanted to do this. I love it, absolutely love it.

Why Aqua Cycling?

Here is the thing, I tried out to be a cycling instructor at Cycle Bar and I didn’t make the cut. It was discourgaing… But….you know it is God’s timing.

So how did you go from Land Cycle to Water Cycle?

One day I was watching ‘Steve Harvey’ and I saw an aqua cyling demo. I was hooked. I went to New York, for the first time ever in my life twice, to take classes! The first time all classes were booked. The second time I took classes every single day for a week! I fell in love. I bought some aqua bikes awhile ago, they were collecting dust, my husband finally convince me to take the plunge.

How did you come up with the name HydroFit?

I was trying to think of something in general. Hdryo is all encompassing-it is a water workout it covers everything not just cycling. 

What makes HydroFit so special?

It is an experience that you can’t get anywhere else. In the water, your body is not limited. Where on land you are restricted. Everyone can do it. It doesn’t matter if you are a 80 year old woman or a 30 year old man, you can get a intense workout in.

Info about Classes?

I offer class Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. From 6pm-7pm at Pullen Park Aquactic Center.

What do you need for Class?

  1. Water shoes (which can be provided)
  2. Swim suit or short spandex and tank. I don’t recommend cotton, cotton gets so heavy.
  3. Towel
  4. A smile 🙂
